Approximately 400 stores were located in the United Kingdom. Under the name of The Cross-Tailoring Company, Sir Montague Maurice Burton founded the company in Chesterfield in 1903. London Stock Exchange listed the company in 1929, with 400 stores, factories, and mills. Following its separation from Debenhams in 1998, Burtons became a brand name, and the Arcadia Group name became the company's name. After splitting from Debenhams in 1998, the company acquired various other brands, including competitors. As a result, Burtons became a brand name, and Arcadia Group became the group name.
